you should shorten the flowers stems to 3 or 4 inches long. prune off stems on which leaves show signs of black spots. you can remove as much as tow-thirds of the plant to stimulate new growth. i hope this has helped i have a website that may help it is more for water gardens but you may find it beneficial. water garden
