scarred lawn

when we moved to this house there were 30plus leylandi trees around the perimeter. 3 years ago ichopped them down and dug out the roots, but there seems to be skiens of roots and bald dry patches(no matter how much water i drown them in or seed it.)is there a way round this other than re-turfing?
